Arterial embolectomy catheters. These are balloon-carrying catheters used to remove an embolus (blood vessel obstruction) from an artery. The catheter is introduced into the affected artery in a deflated state using angiography (the x-ray examination of an artery that has been oulined by prior injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium). The device is manipulated beyond the embolus and the balloon component inflated. The catheter is then withdrawn, carrying the embolus with it. These are latex-free catheters, designed to avoid the allergic reaction that can occur when latex is used. They are colour-coded for size, with sealed instruction sheets attached.
