At the age ofnineteen he became a brakeman withthe Southern Pacific lines. He servedthe Southern Pacific successively asbrakeman, freight conductor, yardmas-ter and passenger conductor. In 1902he was appointed division superintend-ent of the Pacific Electric Railway, con-tinuing in that capacity until 1911,when he resigned to join the LosAngeles Railway as assistant superin-tendent.
