The royal castle of Kalø was originally founded by King Erik Menved around 1313 as one of at least four castles in Jutland, in order to improve the royal power after the peasant rebellion. The castle were build in an island in the Kalø bay, which were connected to the mainland via a dam. The castle only stood for about a decade after the completion. But a rebuilding were started somewhat later on, by whom is still unknown.
