Polarised light micrograph of cortisol, or hydro- cortisone, the chief steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex. Cortisol plays a role in both normal carbohydrate metabolism and in the body's response to physical & emotional stress. While its short term effects are exerted in conjunction with the adrenaline hormones, longer lasting actions are exerted independently and relate to adaptation of the body to improve defence against infection, promote tissue repair, and to provide adequate nutrients in the form of glucose & amino acids. Cortisol is used medically to treat inflammation arising from injury, allergies and rheumatoid disorders. Magnification: x12 at 35mm size.
