The ascent of thismountain from Otisville is about two miles in length, andhere we see the next specimen of heavy work its pas-sage has made is a heavy embank-ment, supported by a re-taining wall 1000 feet inlength and 30 feet are now descendingthe slope of ten miles be-fore us, and the scenery ofthe valley below is rapid-ly improving in interestand cultivation. A smilegradually breaks over thedull cheek of Nature Farm-houses and meadows relievethe solitude of this valley, to which the Never sink Rivergives its name. One of these views is of remarkable beau-ty. We perceive on the opposite side of the vale a shining.
