MAXON CONCRETE UOAD FIMSHER This machine, built by the MaxonCompany, is provided with a 9-horsepower gasoline engine and has two de-mountable rear wheels to transfer it fromplace to place. It has no cast iron, allcastings are the finest grade of semi-steel, malleable iron or cast steel andall gears are cut. Among the valuablefeatures reported are the divided strike-oflfs that insure perfectly balancedmotion and minimum reaction on theforms; a pneumatic tamper with adjust-able scoop and crusher; slow moving, long stroke adjustable belt float; com-pletely enclosed transmissions; allmetal, durable strike-off and tamper;independence of the different operations;absence of vibration; and central posi-tion of operator. The tamper extendsacross the full width of the road and isoperated by compressed air. The sprockets are of alloy steel withopenings between the teeth which permitthe dirt to fall through, and is a patentedconstruction of the Bates Steel These sprockets are mounted directly ontlic rear axle shaft. The front idlercrawler wheels are the same as theBates Steel Mule and arc carried onHyatt Roller Bearings, entirely inclosedfrom the dust. The tension of the crawl-ers is taken up by coil springs which areadjustable. To get the same pressureon the front end of the crawlers as onthe rear, a semi elliptical spring is at-tached to the front of the crawler framesand the under part of the tractor. Thisspring is pivoted in the center whichpermits the crawlers to oscillate entirelyindependently of each other and at thesame time get an equal pressure at allpoints. The tractor is fitted with two crawlerturning devices, each having an inde-pendent foot lever so that either crawlercan be slowed down or stopped entirelyfor short turning, with the result thatan inside turning circle of 2 feet is ob-tained. The 8-inch wide crawler shoesare so made that rubber blocks can beattached on to the crawler at a slightadditional cost for hauling o
