Harrington ethnography recording. Recording on an early Dictaphone, together with written notes, being documented for the Smithsonian by US linguist and ethnologist John Peabody Harrington (1884-1961). This is part of a series documenting 'white indians', dated December 1924. Harrington worked for the Smithsonian Museum's Bureau of American Ethnology for 40 years from 1915, recording large amounts of data on indigenous peoples. He was among the first to record indigenous languages. This photograph is from the National Photo Company Collection, consisting mostly of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
