Sir Emsley Carr, editor and part-proprietor of the News ofthe World, vice-chairman andjoint managing Director of theWestern Mail, and director ofGeorge Newnes Ltd., was bornat Leeds on May 1, Emsley Carr joined thestaff of the Western Mailas a junior reporter and had athorough and practical coach-ing in all departments. Hischief work was in making theNews of the World, with whichhe became connected in 1891;the most popular Sunday paperin the completed and he himself voluntarily gave up a private expedi-tion to Chicoutimi, which had been arranged to take place atthe end of the trip, in order that the Quebec Governmentmight be able to change the date of its official luncheon inhonor of the delegates. Lord Burnham was ably assisted in all the duties pertainingto his office by Lady Burnham, who was equally zealous in thedischarge of the social obligations falling to her lot. On severaloccasions she was called upon to speak and she won the hearti-est applause of her hearers by the clever and convincing wayin which she expressed herself. Always cool and collected,she was able to meet every emergency. When officiating at theunfurling of the school childrens flag at Edmonton before acrowd of 15,000 people, the ropes caught and the flag refusedto unfold.
