Annals of surgery . s, which were hardened in 95 per cent, alcohol at once, at theautopsy, were found most suitable. The sections were stainedin several ways; for the study of the tissues hsematoxylin andeosin were used; for the demonstration of the parasite and thefiner details of its structure. Grams and Weigerts, but especiallyMallorys methods, were employed. As the last procedure maynot be generally known I shall give it in brief. Thin sectionsof tissue are transferred from water to a clean slide and firmlyblotted. The section now adheres to the slide. Freshly pre-pared aniline oil, gentian-violet, is dropped on, and allowed toremain for five minutes, when it is removed by blotting. Thegentian-violet is followed by Lugols solution, which remainsabout the same length of time in contact with the section. Thisbeing in turn blotted off, the section is differentiated, dehydrated, and counter-stained by means of pure aniline oil. in which crys-tallized basic fuchsin has been dissolved to a cherry-red Fig. I.—Showing Hudsons case of actinomycosis. ACTINOMYCOSIS IIOMINIS. 629 The aniline oil is washed off with xylol, the latter blotted, balsamadded, and the cover-slip applied. Histology.—Lungs.—The lungs present a somewhat varyingpicture in different parts; but as the differences are in degreerather than in kind, it will not be necessary to treat separately ofthem. All the structures are altered; parenchyma, framework, bronchi, and pathological processes of different type are met most recent and acute changes are, strangely enough, foundimmediately about the parasites. Even in specimens stained inhsematoxylin and eosin the latter are clearly discernible, and theirpreservation is so perfect that many details of structure becomeevident. The parasites lie singly within air-spaces (alveoli), andare in groups of two or three in adjacent ones. (See Figures iand 2.) They are surrounded by polymorpho-nuclear leucocyteswhich fill the spaces, and thus give ri
