Lowering the load tends tooperate a coarse pitch screw through the gearing, grippingthe middle disk which, by means of a roller-pawl, is pre-vented from turning during the lowering movement butis free to turn when the load is being raised. The resultingfriction arrests the downward movement of the load untilthe hoist motor is again started and drives the hoist gearingwith sufficient speed to overcome the action of the pitch of the screw is such that the friction and resist-ance of the disk is always in excess of the lowering effort ofthe load. This insures the prompt application of the loadbrake when the motor stops and prevents accidents incase of a failure of the electric current or the motor. In another design of the flat friction-disk type of loadbrake the center disk remains stationary^both in the lowering 212 HOISTING MACHINERY.
