Nine-tenths of these 500,000 are pure blacks, the remainder being mostly mulattoes, with a few whites. It is estimated that two-thirds of the whole popu- lation are females. The geographical position of the island is such, that it commands the two most important routes to the West Indies, the Mona and the Windward Passage.
