Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Considered the most important Spanish artists of the time, he is honored as one of the last of the Old Masters and one of the first of the Moderns. His early paintings were optimistic and jolly, as the years passed, his works became very pessimistic. A highly regarded portrait painter, Goya did this portrait of Don Ventura Rodriguez in 1786. Rodriguez was a Spanish architect and artist. Rodriguez's father was a brick layer and the two did work at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez.
