Closeup of a 17 year locust or magicicada This cicada is a large noise-producing insect of the order Homoptera. The adult has a stout body, a wide, blunt head, protruding eyes, and two pairs of membranous wings. This particular species called Magicicada has a 17 year life cyle which is the longest known life cycle of any insect.
