Agate is a catchall term for a colourful variety of micro- or non-crystalline chalcedony (silica) that displays attractive colours and/or striking forms or patterning. Agate is often carved and polished to make attractive stone faces, trinkets and other decorative objects. It may also be impregnated, heated or treated otherwise to enhance or change its colours. Most attractive and colourful agates are found in volcanic rocks, in which the agate was deposited, inside cavities and veins, by precipitation of the siliceous material from percolating water. The bowl here seen has a diameter of 140 mm and has been carved in Brazil, from agate retrieved in the Minas Gerais of Brazil.
