Ephedrine drug crystals. Polarised light micrograph of the hydrochloride form of ephedrine, a stimulant drug that has similar effects to the natural body stimulant adrenaline. It increases the heartbeat intensity, dilates the bronchi (airways of the lungs) and constricts the blood vessels. It is used as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, concentration aid, nasal decongestant and to treat asthma. It can be administered by mouth or by inhalation. Ephedrine is similar in structure to the synthetic recreational drugs amphetamine (speed) and methamphetamine. Side effects may include nausea, insomnia, headache and nervousness.
