YAL-1 airborne laser aircraft during a test flight. This is a Boeing 747 aircraft that has been modified to carry the YAL-1 Airbourne Laser Testbed weapons system for the US Air Force. The system consists of a chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) for destroying tactile ballistic missiles (TBMs) and two target illuminator lasers used for target tracking. Due to cost and the limited range of the COIL it is unlikely that the YAL-1 will become operational.
