A Tulip, Two Springs of Myrtle and Two Seashells by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) watercolour on parchment, c 1670-1680. As an artist's daughter, Maria Sibylla Berian learned to draw at an early age. Like so many female artists at that time, she chose flowers and insects as her subjects. She excelled in her art - she observed insects, particularly butterflies - in a scientific manner, travelled to the Dutch colony of Suriname to study them and published books of her work.
