An old circa WWII press photo showing the British ship (oil tanker) BRITISH EARL in dry dock at Sniths Dock with a large hole in its hull caused by hitting a mine at sea. She was built by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd of Newcastle upon Tyne in the Low Walker Yard in 1901 ( Launched: 08/12/1900 Completed: 01/03/1901) . Originally named the Pinna, she was acquired in 1917, sold to Italy 1929 and scuttled in 1940 . She was refloated and taken over by the US Government with a new name Orissa, The vessel was scrapped in 1950 having also been named Tankschindler, Trottiera & Malvern
