The device for thus auto-matically moving the knife-carriage back and forth on the lud-plate at these determinate in-tervals consist of a disk having a toothed segment, and keyed upon a Imrizontal auxiliaryshaft, said segment meshing with a pinion >ipon the end of a short vertical shaft; and i)ymeans of a loose pinion at the iqiper end of this vertical shaft working in a rack running inthe bed-plate, the knife-frame is o|)erated at the proper time. The shearing action of theknife is produced through a lever having a roller at its ujiper end, and bearing upon the edgeof the knife-lud; a roller on the lower end of this lever bears against a cam upon the shaft,. The Star Book-Trimmer manufactured by George 11. Sanborn & bons, of Jsew York, isshown in Fig. 2. The rotation of the table is effected by hand, and the clamp is operated bythe large hand-wheel shown. The hand-wheel in front regulates the movable bed for largeand small books. After the knife has come down, the turn-table unlocks itself, and againautomatically locks before the next cut is made, thus doing away with the old-fashionedlock which required the operator to push in a key in front before making a cut. Thisimprovement saves time and hard work, and in connection with the rajiidly moving knifemakes this tvpe of machine one of the fa
