Sensory receptors in skin. Cutaway computer illustration showing the four major types of sensory receptors (mechanoreceptors) found in human skin. From left to right: Meissner (or tactile) corpuscles - which sense light touch; lamellar (or Pacinian) corpuscles - which sense vibration and pressure; merkel nerve endings - which sense pressure, position and deep static touch, such as shape and edges; Ruffini endings ( or bulbous corpuscles) - which sense skin stretching and contribute to control of finger position and movement.
