Ferric Chloride, or Anhydrous Perchloride of Iron. Seventh Synthetical Reaction.—Pass chlorine (generated fromblack manganese oxide and hydrochloric acid in a flask) throughstrong sulphuric acid contained in a small bottle, and thence bythe ordinary narrow glass tubing quite to the bottom of a test-tube containing twenty or thirty small iron tacks (or a Florenceflask containing 2 or 3 ounces ; see Fig. 31), the lattter kept hot Fig. Preparation of Anhydrous Ferric Chloride. by a gas flame; the higher chloride of iron, ferric chloride, orthe perchloride * of iron (Fe2Cl6) is formed and condenses inthe upper part of the tube or flask as a mass of small, dark, iridescent crystals. When a tolerably thick crust of the saltis formed, break off the part of the glass containing it, beingcareful that the remaining corroded tacks are excluded, andplace it in ten or twenty times its weight of water; the result- * The prefix per (and hyper) used here and elsewhere is from vTi-ep,hyper, over or above, and simply means the highest of several; thusperchloride, the highest chloride. IRON. 149 ing solution, poured off from any pieces of glass, is a pureneutral solution of ferric chloride, and will be serviceable foranalytical reactions
