IBM 650 computer at US Naval Observatory, 1961. US astronomical calculator Solomon Elvove (right) working with the IBM 650, the first electronic computer used at the US Naval Observatory, Washington DC, USA. This computer was first used from the late 1950s until the IBM 1410 was installed in the early 1960s. Such early computers were used to carry out complex astronomical and navigational calculations.
