HOUSES FOR TOWN OR COUNTRY This quality of style is of all aesthetic qualities themost difficult to describe. It is so simple and un-mistakable in its effect, yet so complicated andevasive in its origin. I cannot attempt to define it,but perhaps some idea of its meaning can be inferredfrom the enumeration of several important elementsof effect, the omission of any one of which would roba dwelling of true style. It implies for one thing acertain integrity in the formal design of a building—the working out of an appropriate architectural ideain a manner both consistent and interesting. It im-plies in addition to this fundamental correctness ofdesign the power to awaken relevant and suggestivememories. A stylish house must express the deri-vation of our own good domestic manners from cer-tain former distinguished ways of living by recallingwithout necessarily copying the architectural formsand materials associated with these desirable man-ners.
