Dragon and Tiger, mid- to late 1500s. Sesson Shūkei (Japanese, 1504-1589). Pair of six-panel folding screens; ink on paper; painting: x 339 cm (61 15/16 x 133 7/16 in.); framed: x 354 cm (67 13/16 x 139 3/8 in.). A tiger looks upon a waterfall from a bamboo grove, and a dragon dives through clouds on the right. Tiger and dragon are traditional symbols of the balancing forces in the world, yin (the feminine aspect) and yang (the masculine aspect). The screens are a tour de force of ink brushwork by an artist affiliated with Zen Buddhist communities in eastern and northern Japan.
