MENDENHALL, A letter from a UnitedStates Army officer sta-tioned at Fort Slocum re-cently appeared in one ofthe metropolitan news-papers, in which he char-acterized the West PointSpirit as the spirit thatgets things done, no mat-ter how great the diffi-culty or odds; the spiritof respect for lawful orders; and the spiritof unhesitating obedience. This characteri-zation sets forth the efficiency of this insti-tution and its influence on its students andon the country at large, and emphasizes thewords I have selected for our thought fromthe Book to be given to the members of thegraduating class: The word of God isquick and powerful and sharper than anytwo-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). The West Point spirit is the spirit thatdoes things in the face of insurmountableobstacles. No task is too hard to undertake,no road too difficult over which to march,and no height too high to climb.
