Body broadly pentagonal, the i^nout very broad but somewhat pointed; disk wider than long( inches wide, ]): length of di^^k ;0 times in the long whip-like tail; teeth not large, about V f. species Type 13 oblique series on upper jaw and 23 oblique series in lower; upper buceal tUqi with tine fringes;width of mouth in snout; distance between lower gill-openings equal to distanee from first to fifthopening; length of ventral fins slightly less than inteiorliital space; tail without fold of any kind, itslower surface smooth, the upper surface with seattcicil small piickles (spine removed by fishermanfrom type); a row of 10 large spinules in front of spine: sc\cii small spines on median line of disk atits highest joint; a few scattered minute s]iiciili-- sc :iicily showing through the skin near these spinesand on interorbital region, otherwise disk jxriictly Miniotli. Color in spirits, back a uniform drab, top of tail dusky, under surface of disk uniform white, undersurfai-c of tail light brown. THK FISHES OF SAMOA. 185 One specimen, type no. 51712, U. S.
