CommercialFisheries H E commercial fisheries of Ontario are of inestimable value as a nationalpossession, and constitute an important field of industry. The fish-eries of the Great Lakes are the most extensive in the world so far asfresh water fish are concerned, while in addition, the northern andnorth-western waters teem with the finer qualities of fish. The fishingindustry is now carefully regulated by the Government of the Province,and under the judicious policy that has lately been adopted, it is likely inthe near future to afford a livelihood to considerable numbers of people,and become an important and continuous source of food supply andrevenue. The principal fish found in the waters of the Province are the whitefish,salmon, trout, herring-, sturgeon, bass, pickerel, pike, and industry gives employment to about 2,500 men, and repre-Varietks sents an investment of three quarters of a million dollars in tugs,boats, ice houses, and appliances.
