Founded by the Danes in 1772, Upernavik (pop. 1500) is the largest town north of Ilulissat on Greenland's remote and rugged northwest coast. Its mostly Inuit residents still hunt polar bears on the winter ice but halibut fishing is the main source of employment and income, Upernavik, Greenland.
