Thomas Hees worked as a diplomat in Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, as a mediator to ransom Dutch slaves and to counteract the privateering against Dutch ships. Hees let himself smoking in a relaxed pose portray between its gains from North Africa. On the back of the canvas is shown who is his servant, "Thomas de Negro, 17 years."
