GEORGE MORLAND HIS rJFE AND WORKS CHAPTER I It is stated that George Morland traced his descenttrom the famous diplomat and mechanic Sir SamuelMorland, who flourished during the Commonwealthand the reigns of Charles II. and James II., butpositive proof of this has not been discovered. Thelater biographers of the artist base the assertion onpassages in the works of two earlier writers. Dawe,^referring to the death of Morlands father, whichoccurred at the end of 1797, says :— Soon after this event Morland was advised to claim thedormant title of Baronet which had been left by Sir SamuelMorland, ... on whom it had been conferred by CharlesII., and from whom our artist is said to have been lineallydescended, though his father had never assumed the title.
