The flames leaped the South Branchof the Chicago River and spread with great rapidity through the businessparts of the city. All day long the deluge of fire rolled on, crossed themain channel of the river, and swept into a blackened ruin the whole dis-trict between the North Branch and the lake as far northward as LincolnPark.
