Light microscopy of squamous cell carcinoma of skin. A type of skin cancer characterized by abnormal growth of superficial epithelial cells resulting in excessive amounts of keratin seen on the surface. The cancer also grows into the deeper dermal region and may be locally invasive. Inflammatory reactions accompany this local spread. Commonly caused by solar radiation but also by burns, chemical carcinogens or chronic ulcers. In some cases this cancer may spread to local lymph nodes. Magnification x20 when height printed at 10 cm.
