Close up of a timid red squirrel sciurus vulgaris eating a nut at a bird table. The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrels (genus Sciurus). Red squirrels are tree-dwelling omnivorous rodents that are frequently found throughout Europe. In Britain, however, numbers have decreased dramatically due to the introduction of the more aggressive eastern grey squirrel from North America.
