I I ; Plxms & SectolM ! ( 201 ) ON THE CROSS AND PLATFORM ATRICHBOROUGH. BY THE LATE GEORGE DOWKER, The very unique and wonderful construction known as thecross and platform, within the walls of the Castrum at Rich-borough, has not only been a puzzle to antiquaries, but hasexcited the interest and the speculations of all who areacquainted with its enormous proportions. As further excavations on the site of this cross and plat-form are not likely to add much to the knowledge which wealready possess, I will endeavour to gather up all the factsthat have been ascertained, with a view to helping us towardssome safe conclusions respecting the meaning of these remark-able structures. For particulars or notes upon the cross and substructureI may refer my readers to Lelands Itinerary, 1560 ; Lambarde,1580; Camden, 1607; Somner, 1668. But for details ofthe structure we must consult the plan and particulars of theexcavations first undertaken by William Boys, the historianof Sandwich,
