It is thought that the foundation stock was from Normandy and Brittany. These early cattle were rough and not developed in the milk-giving quality, but from this foundation has been developed an excellent breed of cattle. In 1779 a law was passed prohibiting the importation of cattle into Jersey and this law has always been rigidly en- forced, with the result that the cattle have been purely bred for more than a century. Jerseys have been imported to a large extent into the United States and have increased in number so rapidly and have proved.
