The Band of the Grenadier Guards (front) amd of the Welsh Guards (middle) are marching into their starting position for the parade. On their right No. 1 Guard, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, the "Escort for the Colour", behind them. on the very right, the "King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery". On the top of the photo spectators watching from St. James's Park, on the very left spectators in front of the No. 10 Downing Street Garden. The Colour Sergeant (bottom middle) is observing the proceedings. The bands of the Irish Guards (blue plumes on the bearskins) and Coldstream Guards (red plumes) have already taken their positions. The public stands behind the bands are at the rear of the garden of No. 10 Downing Street. This photo was taken with a Canon 1D Mk IV and a Canon 600mm/f4 lens. "Trooping the Colour" is a traditional military ceremony going back to the 17th century. The "Colour" (the regimental flag) is presented (trooped) to the soldiers, so they could remember their flag, usually a rallying point, in the heat of battle. Since 1748 the parade also marks the official birthday of the British Sovereign, so it is "The Queen's Birthday Parade", held every second Saturday in June. All the above is based on information from the official programme, the web site , the BBC productions "Trooping the Colour " 2008-2010, plus "For Queen and Country", and Wikipedia.
