Blue sky morning sun shade view red yellow bricks neo-classical Basilica de la Marced below modern skyscrapers, Santiago, Chile

The red and yellow brickwork, neo-classical Basilica de la Merced dates to 1795, being a replacement for earlier churches destroyed by earthquakes in 1647 and 1730. In 1928 a carillon of 28 bronze bells was installed by Pope Pius X1. The Order of Our Lady of Mercy (founded 1218) settled in Santiago in 1549, eight years after the city's founding in 1541.
