PICTURES OF YESTERYEAR - Managed by PPL PHOTO AGENCY Circa 1893 America's Cup. The yacht VIGILANT, the successful Nathanael Herreshoff designed American defender which beat The Earl of DunravenÕs British yacht VALKYRIE II 3:0. The extra width of VIGILANTÕs, deck allowed her to carry additional crew, numbering 70 in all. This was a legitimate means at the time of adding to a yachtÕs ballast, which her owner had learnt from his days sailing in the old sandbag racers, but prohibited from then on.
