REED calamus, ai~undo, fistula, statera), the generic nameof a reed of any kind ; it occurs in numerous pas-sages of the 0. T., and sometimes denotes thestalk of wheat (Gen. xli. 5, 22), or the branches of the candlestick (Ex. xxv. andxxxvii.); in Job xxxi. 22, hdneh denotes the bone REED 1021. of the arm between the elbow and the shoulder[os humeri); it was also the name of a measure oflength equal to six cubits (Ez. xli. 8, xl. 5). Theword is variously rendered in the A. V. by stalk, branch, bone, calamus, reed. In theN. T. KaKanos may signify the stalk of plants(Mark xv. 36 ; Matt, xxvii. 48, that of the hyssop, but this is doubtful), or a reed (Matt. xi. 7,xii. 20; Luke to. 24; Mark xv. 19); or ameasuring rod (Rev. xi. 1, xxi. 15, 16); or a pen (3 John 13). Strand (Flor. Palaest. 28-30)gives the following names of the reed plants ofPalestine:—(SaccAaruirt officmde, Cyperuspapyrus{Papyms antiquorum), C. rotundus, and C. escu-lentus, and Arundo scriptoria; but no doubt thespecies are numerous.
