ABATIS AND DEFENDER IN THE COPYRIGmT, on, PAIR DITCH OT pyB body of men, knew from the shouts even beforehe saw the flag upon the breastworks that thewedge had been driven home. Leaving behindtheir own dead and wounded lying mingled withthe bodies of the brave defenders, without wait-ing for orders, men from each division of theSixth Corps pressed ahead, broke up the SouthSide Railroad and cut the telegraph wires. Whenthe officers had at length calmed the ardor oftheir troops and re-formed the lines, a large partof the corps wheeled to the left and dashed alongthe Confederate entrenchments, soon overcameall resistance and swept victoriously forward asfar as Hatchers Run, capturing artillery and alarge number of prisoners. There they wereagain re-formed, marched back to the originalpoint of attack, and thence pushed forward inconjimction with the Twenty-fourth Corps tocomplete the investment of Petersburg. In thisadvance some Confederate batteries, very dash-ingly handled, inflicted considerable loss untilthey were driven behind the inner lines
