Theroof leaked, so did the skylight. It was sand-wiched in between red brick buildings east, south and west, and had an eastern good working light was lost at about 3 p. m. At that time there was no day electric service in our city(now we have it), so I could look for no help from that ! Would it work ? Why not try it. I had two old head-rest stands. I called in the Superintendent of the Gas Com-pany, and laid my troubles, as well as plans, before him, andrequested his help. We used two pieces of gas pipe six feetlong for the uprights, and one piece five feet long for thecross piece from which seven Wellsbach inverted gas burnerswere suspended—each burner being fitted with a reflex in- 244. A holehad to be drilled through a twelve inch brick wall to connectwith the gas. The entire material and labor cost $ The brick buildings no longer held any misgivings for me,for when the daylight was interrupted by them I simply turnedon the gas and with it, in connection with the daylight, I hadno trouble in obtaining full timed exposures just as quick asthe shutter would work. Then at night, real dark jet blacknights, I found I could make full timed negatives in just fourseconds. It is my intention to use the lamp this winter. I may add afew more burners to it for speed. I expect the double num-ber of burners will give sufficient illumination to give a fulltimed exposure in one second. Figure i shows the lamp after it was installed, and Figure 2shows a reproduction of a print from a negative that wasmade by the lamp on one of those jet
