At thelower end may still Ite seen part of the hole, so \counnonly found in some pipes that are made to beused with a wooden stem, as in this case, the stem-liole being on the back of the bowl. This altogether unique pipe (fig. 23) is also of soap-stone, nearly quadrangular in cross-section, the sideshown and the opposite side being a little rounded. Theprojecting proportion seems intended to represent the ^ ^*head of some long-billed bird—perhaps a crane—but the lower. 21 61 Victoria. Sessional Papers (No. 1). A. 1898 portion of the back is broken otl. At the base of the pipe there hasbeen a liole for stem attachment. The stem-liolc is behind, a little- below the middle. Found near Balsam Lake by Mr. Laidlaw. The pipe represented by figure 24 is of mottled soapstone, and is very rudely carved in imitation of a person seated, the
