Theodore Roosevelt on safari. Former US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) standing with a gun next to a bull elephant shot at Meru, Kenya, while on safari in Africa in 1909. Roosevelt was 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He was also famous as an explorer and hunter. On this expedition, through Kenya (then British East Africa), the Belgian Congo and Sudan, his group killed or collected over 11,000 animals, including over 500 big game animals. Roosevelt's other travels included an expedition to the Brazilian jungle from 1913 to 1914. Photographed by his son, Kermit Roosevelt (1889-1943).
