Hiooko, GeneralMaster Mechanic of the & Duluth Railroad, sometime ago devised an applicationof compressed air to the pump-ing of water at the Gladstoneshops of that road, which isworthy of note. It is an adapt-ation of the well-linown air liftto conditions, under which adeep well pump had not givensatisfaction. The engravings illustrate theplan. The well has an eight-inch casing, driven to a depthof 750 feet, but now partly filledup with silt, mailing the depth640 feet. Formerly a deep wellpump with a 36-foot pitmanwas used. This caused consid-erable annoyance by requiringconstant attention, repairs andin replacing this arrangementthe location of the well nearthe stationary boiler plant andin the midst of the shop build-ings was found unfortunate, be-cause it necessitated forcing thewater underground horizontallyto a distance of more than 500feet to the road water tanks.
