Boies, who had presided at the first andsecond meetings which led to the organization of the fourcompanies, and had then joined his family at the seashore, waselected major, with general good feeling. Mr. Boies had received a military training, in some measure,while a member of the Ellsworth Zouaves, just at the openingof the civil war, but had been prevented by family obligationsfrom enlisting when so many of these Zouaves marched to thefront.
