Tsunami relief effort. Ikonos satellite image of Phuket International Airport. Civilian (white) and military relief (grey) aeroplanes are seen on the tarmac. Stacks of relief supplies (light grey) are around the edge of the tarmac. This image was taken on 1 January 2005, 6 days after an under water earthquake, the largest earthquake for 40 years, caused huge waves, or tsunamis, in the Indian Ocean. Many of the surrounding coastlines were devastated, the airport was not damaged. The largest aid effort ever is underway, with 6 billion US dollars in aid pledged. However, the destruction of coastal infrastructure, and flooding, have left some areas hard to reach.
