Small lymphocytes, TEM

Small lymphocytes. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section of small lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are involved in the immune system's defence mechanisms, lymph system, and antibody production. These cells arise from large lymphocytes and will migrate to blood vessels and circulate around the body. These are the most common type of white cell in normal blood. They have a large, dense, round nucleus and thin basophilic cytoplasm. Magnification: x4000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
