Impetigo infection on the body of a 4-month-old baby boy. The infection is secondary to a case of chickenpox (varicella). Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. The infection is common in babies and children, occurring mainly on the face and limbs. It starts as a red patch and develops into small pustules that join together, forming a yellow, crusty sore. Patients must not share any items that come into contact with the affected area, such as towels, as this will spread the infection. Impetigo is treated locally with antibiotic drugs. The infection heals in seven to ten days.
