In 1847 he was Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor;was renominated in 1848, 1849 and 1850. In 1851, there being no choiceby the people, he was elected to the office and in 1852 was again chosenunder like circumstances. He filled this position with marked ability. He took great interest in agricultural matters, and largely throughhis efforts the State Board of Agriculture was established in 1852. He servedon the board during 1852-53; was president of the Franklin County Agricul-tural Society several 92 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. He was (Iceplj- interested in historical matters. The last years of hishfe were devoted to historical and antiquarian research. He compiled theCushman genealogy and was also active in the publishing of the BernardstonAnnals. He was a member of the New England Historic and GenealogicalSociety of Boston; corresponding member of the State Historical Society ofWisconsin. In educational matters he was especially active; was for fifteen years amember of the school board of his town. He assisted liberally toward theerection of the Powers Institute buildings. Two of the buildings, CushmanHail and Cushman Library are named in his honor. He was an active member of the Unitarian Church and was for yearsthe superintendent of the Sunday School. He gave liberally toward thesupport of the church and its benevolences, and willed his residence to thechurch for a parsonage. He also gave liberally tow
