The story of New England, illustrated, being a narrative of the principal events from the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620 and of the Puritans in 1624 to the present time . rtant a matter, and theGeneral Court this year agreed that the contention of thefreemen was well founded, and they passed a law that theGovernor, Deputy Governor, and assistants should everyyear be chosen by the whole court of Governor, DeputyGovernor, assistants, and freemen. The freemen elected thisyear Mr. Dudley as Governor, Mr. Ludlow, deputy, and , treasurer, and also elected Mr. Winthrop asassistant. As immigration was heavy and increasing each year,Boston seemed to be the place where the majority settled, and it became a serious matter with the town officials in theway of apportioning land to the newcomers, so by orderof the General Court, a book recording the location and own-ership of all lands was begun. It is unfortunate that thevery earliest pages of the towns records are missing and thatmany of the pages are now almost illegible, yet from 1634these precious pages are in a fair state of preservation. Asfar as they are now decipherable they begin as follows: 69.
